Kings Mountain R&D Encourages Interest in STEM for Local High School Class
Our R&D team in Kings Mountain is Powering Potential by promoting STEM education through hands-on learning at the site.
On
Wednesday, February 19, our Kings Mountain R&D team hosted the
Advanced Placement Chemistry class from Kings Mountain High School for a
visit to the KGM site and laboratories. The team introduced the
students to Albemarle, the Lithium business and the site’s operations.
The students toured the labs, and learned how lithium is extracted and
made into a usable form.
Hands-on Learning: Lemons Aren't Just for Lemonade
During the site visit, students tried their hands at making
batteries – from potatoes and lemons – to help them understand the
basics of an electrochemical cell. Their experiments, learning and
teamwork gave them a small taste of what it is like to be part of a
R&D team. The Albemarle team then showed them how real lithium
batteries work and how to use them safely.
The visit wrapped-up
with a pizza lunch and Q&A session with several of the chemists and
engineers at the site. Giving these students a chance to learn about the
exciting technology work going on at Kings Mountain helps build
connections with our community, and will hopefully power their potential
as they embark on their college careers.
